A games session at Teech’s this Friday gave us the excuse we needed to present, for the first time, the cnut trophies. We’ve not awarded the UT2004 trophy yet, but the RoN trophy - and the BottomFeeder wooden spoon - were both up for grabs. In true award presentation style we have photos of the recipient shaking hands with the person giving the award - in this case our own Teech. Continue reading ‘The cnut Awards’
Talking to Richard yesterday, who was unable to play games in person on Friday and joined us remotely, I remarked that without him with us (with his lovely K750i) there were no photos of the night. It would appear that I spoke too soon though as I’ve just checked my phone and there are plenty. It looks like most of them were taken by me but I have very little recollection of doing so… that’s what happens when Jarrod brings the vodka.
So, plenty of photos and, according to my call list, I phoned Phil, Adina and Fuller several times through the night (or at least someone with my phone did!). Adina tells me that we did have a conversation of sorts which was hugely entertaining for her given my inebriated state.
Having said last time that we’d broken our record for games-night duration, we did it again. I went to bed shortly after dawn, and Teech didn’t go to bed at all (although he did have a sneaky power-nap at around 4am). All hail the Teech for venturing out at about 11am to find eggs, bread, bacon and orange juice the consumption of which made me feel almost human.
The last gamer left at 4pm Saturday, thus setting another BOfH-Games record: the first 24 hour session!
We’ve started pooling our Games Night photos. It’s mainly Richard and I who have added our collection, and we have pictures going back to some of the earliest nights in Basingstoke, the first (and only?) Hyde Close night, and even a Portsmouth evening. We’ve also got evidence of those nights with special Australian guests, and one where we actually had a girl gamer (they do exist!).
I’m going to quote Tycho’s post in its entirety here, because I agree with him 100% and there’s not much I can add to it!
Rise of Nations was a great game, but if you were flipping through screenshots seeking out some new addiction it wouldn’t have stood out - you’d get the impression that you had played “that game” before.
It’s hard to dismiss Rise of Legends in the same way. Big Huge Games could probably have put out another Rise of Nations in the same vein and done alright, but instead they chose to go completely batshit insane and I think we’re all the better for it.
Teech, Shep and I spent a good amount of time this evening (morning, whatever) trying to find some concrete information on the minimum spec required to play RoL. We’ve yet to find anything, though judging by the screen shots we’re going to need some pretty beefy graphics cards to run this baby. Like Tycho, we’re looking forward to it!
Richard took some photos at the last lanparty. This would be last friday which finished with Fuller and I crashing out at about 4am after an evening (and morning) of vodka and Redbull fuelled games. Suffice to say it was a fairly quiet Saturday!

I don’t think we put off newcomer Pete too much, so hopefully the next games night will be just as well attended!
