Mhymoufifhnumb

Entertaining things to do after you’ve been to the dentist:

  • Attempt to drink a hot cup of tea through just one side of your mouth.
  • Chew a hot-cross bun, with no feeling across most of your biting surface.
  • Talk to anyone.

I popped into Tesco on the way back - I must have looked like a stroke victim to the girl at the checkout.  At least I wasn’t dribbling on myself.  Well I don’t think I was.

All this fun for just a hundred and forty quid - bargain!

(Recently) Frequently Asked Questions…

If you’re on my MSN contact list you’ll recently have seen a request from me to add me to your list again.  This has confused a few people, usually resulting in a dialogue like this:

What are you doing?
Why have you added yourself again?

The old MSN account was hdurdle@hotmail.com.  Which I never - ever - use for email.  But people insist on sending email to my MSN address because they assume that’s what I use for email.

Isn’t that a reasonable assumption?

Well, yeah, probably.  Except most people who know me ought to remember by now that my email address has been howard@durdle.com for about 9 years now.

Right.  In which case why didn’t you just sign up with that address for MSN in the first place?

Historical reasons.

Enlighten me.

Because back in the olden days, when ICQ ruled the world and MSN was just a shiny new toy, you had to have a hotmail address to try it out.

Really?

Probably.  I honestly can’t remember, but that sounded plausible didn’t it?

I’ll give you that.

Thanks.

So hdurdle@hotmail.com is dead?

Yep.  Well, I won’t be using it for anything, but will be keeping it active so no other bast takes it over!

Good plan.  So what now?

That’s it I think.  MSN email now matches regular email.  All is right in the world.

Gee, thanks for explaining everything so well.

Pleasure.

Balance

Last night I played a (poor) game of tennis and hit the gym.  Today I am doing my best to balance this healthy behaviour by eating mostly twiglets and jaffa cakes.  I consider it my responsibility to bring balance to the universe in this way.  You’ll thank me when we don’t implode when the universe annhiliates itself to bring order to the cosmos.

We’re beyond baby steps now…

The wizards (nay, geniuses) over at the Max OS X Internals Blog have developed what they’re calling BAMBIOS - software that allows legacy booting on Intel-based Macs. From their post:

For example, a regular (that is, non-EFI) version of Linux can be readily booted using this software. [...] Linux works fine, and we have made good progress with booting an unmodified Windows XP installation.

They have a mini presentation which explains a little about what they’re doing, but basically they’re leveraging the Bochs BIOS as a way to give Windows XP (or any other “legacy” X86 OS) something to talk to. Oh - and you just know that Apple love being able to refer to Windows as legacy! I’ll save the rant about the EFI-less Vista release for another time…

Anyway, this is fantastic news, and a huge step towards the dual booting Holy Grail a lot of us early-adopters have been seeking. WinXPonMac.com - are you ready to pay out?

Update: It appears that they’re not the only team to have made good progress. This guy has got XP booting - he says by patching the NT bootloader/kernel.  That sounds like a less elegant solution than building a fake BIOS, but since neither group has made their solution available yet it remains to be seen how easy either of them is for the rest of us to achieve.

The cnut Awards

A games session at Teech’s this Friday gave us the excuse we needed to present, for the first time, the cnut trophies.  We’ve not awarded the UT2004 trophy yet, but the RoN trophy - and the BottomFeeder wooden spoon - were both up for grabs.  In true award presentation style we have photos of the recipient shaking hands with the person giving the award - in this case our own Teech. Bunny Corner

Bunny CornerA warm welcome to Lisa who brings Bunny Corner to the 21st century with the start of her blog.  If you know Lisa at all you won’t be surprised to find that her blog is pink.  Very, very pink.

No really, I think you may underestimate just how pink it is, or how many pink objects one girl can own.  Her mobile is the pinkest I’ve seen, and she’s currently lusting after a new handbag.  A pink one.

Anyway, another blog for the roll…

The Almost Complete Life on Mars Soundtrack

Gene and Sam (note Vinyl Heaven in background)After a little encouragement from Richard, I finally got round to watching Life on Mars - almost all of it in one sitting. I thought it was great, and not least because of the fantastic soundtrack. The BBC have been good enough to list all the tracks used in each episode, along with a little note that “there are no plans to release a soundtrack CD for Life on Mars”. I imagine the red tape involved in releasing all those tracks for one compilation would be nightmarish, but a notice like that is a red rag to a bull for someone with my kind of music collection.

Half an hour (and several trips to iTunes for missing tracks) later, I have completed my “[Almost] Complete Life on Mars Soundtrack”. I say almost because I’ve deliberately left out the tracks from Episode 7 where Sam hears modern music on the radio… I think my soundtrack can do without Britney Spears and Pulp. Not that I have anything against them - it just ruins the 70s cop-rock aesthetic!

I shall enjoy a 70s cop-rock inspired journey to work tomorrow - although not driving quite like Gene does in the show…

Update (Feb 2007): With the release of the new series there’s a renewed interest in the soundtrack.  Since the BBC have removed the link I used, here’s a track list of my “Almost Complete” soundtrack.

Obsessive reloading of the tracking page…

As Richard has pointed out, I’m rather keen to get hold of my new toy: the MacBook Pro I ordered within hours of Steve Jobs announcing them. I’ve not gone so crazy as to build a cardboard replacement until the real thing arrives, but watching the tracker show me how tantalizingly close it’s got is pushing me close to the edge…

Tracking MacBook

Look! It’s in the UK, it’s been here for ages - and it’s been “Out for Delivery” since yesterday morning! Where is it? Where’s my new toy?!
