How old does one have to be before it’s safe to admit that you listen to Burt Bacharach? Not only that you listen to him, but that you actively sought his latest album having heard a track on Jools Holland. The track that brought on my premature aging was Please Explain which is the first track from his latest album At This Time.
It starts with a great bass riff before Burt’s signature organ-sound starts to tinkle over the top. The entire album is fantastic, equally good as background music or in headphones where you can give Burt’s lyrics the attention they deserve. This is especially important on “Where Did it Go?”, in which Burt laments the loss of innocence, trust and respect in the world compared to his childhood.
I’ve mentioned before that my taste in music is somewhat eclectic and I guess this proves it; blogging about Burt now, when I was blogging about drum n bass (of sorts) last year. (Yes, that was a transparent attempt to claw back some musical credibility!)
I was caught out over Christmas using the phrase “I don’t know what they teach kids in school these days” much to my mother’s amusement, so I’m obviously old before my time. Watching Top of the Pops the other day I asked of my sister that fateful question: “Is that the name of the group, or the name of the song?”. The pipe, slippers and pajamas sounds good actually - is there a special dispensation for the under-30’s that allows us to wear old-geezer-garments?
See - everybody gets to the point of having one or two musicial skeletons lurking in their CD rack. I won’t say what Beth said to some of mine…
Baah, you old git - you must learn to walk the righteous path of the Monster.
