Things to do on one of the hottest days so far this year:
Play a fierce game of squash with Keith, having not had a game at all for about 9 months.
Oh yes, that was one of my better ideas that. Really smart. Having been chased round the court for 40 minutes, I then went to see my parents and flaked out on their floor for a couple of hours. I just know that my legs are going to *hate* me tomorrow, and that stairs will be a special form of torture.
Still, it was a good game. More punishment next weekend.
Having already raised Dave’s suspicions by brutally murdering a Channel 9 guy, I’ve managed to confirm my place on his enemies list by buying the Mac.
He’s just jealous, I mean wouldn’t you be? Look at this:

That’s dual monitors running on a dual-2GHz G5 with 2.5Gb of memory and over a terabyte of storage. It’s okay, you may bow before it.
Oh okay Dave, I’ll concede one point: having a mouse with no scroll-wheel is ridiculous. I put the Mac one back in the box within an hour of plugging it in. I’ll be using a Microsoft Intellimouse with it. I’m sure the Mac purists will make me a pariah, but it’s all about the utility of the thing, damnit!
One really nice touch that I hadn’t realised when I ordered it - it has digital optical out and in for audio - so it’s hooked up to my stereo via optical cables… makes for the cleanest sound I’ve ever got out of a computer. It also means I can *really* hear the artifacts on badly encoded MP3s!
Update:
I spoke to Colin earlier, who pointed out that I’d neglected to include a photo of the machine itself! Here it is, ignore the Sony stereo I’ve unceremoniously dumped on top of it!

Update 2:
Dave removed his Macs are Rubbish! post. Does that mean Richard and I win?
Yes, I am obsessively hitting refresh on the shipment tracking page. What of it?
My Mac is sitting at the terminal in Cork, Ireland at the moment. One or two days now.
SHIPPED! My beastie is on it’s way.
Woo-fscking-hoo!
I blame Tom for this. I spent a nice day on Saturday wandering round Southampton with Tom acting as (extremely knowledgeable and competent) tour guide. Then we went back to his house to look at his Mac. Oh dear. If I wasn’t already in love with OS X, letting me play with GarageBand sealed my fate.
I’ve just ordered myself a Power Mac G5 - dual 2.0GHz, 2Gb RAM, with dual-layer DVD writer. As Tom put it when I showed him the spec:
“That’s a super-computer!”
Now I just have to wait for it to arrive. Gah, the curse of wanting instant-gratification. Must have Mac now! 5-7 days before I get new toys…
NTL often come in for a slapping for their customer service, and having experienced it first-hand several times I can tell you that it’s not without good reason. The Guardian has a great story about one man who was pushed that little bit too far by NTL’s lack of interest.
Bravo!
So I went to the Geek Dinner in London on Tuesday night, spending an entertaining evening with a room full of friendly geeks.
Dave has decided I’m evil; and just because I casually pulled the head off a Channel 9 guy! Some people.
Anyway, it was for good reason… I present to you the Zaphod Beeblebrox Channel 9 guy. It is a work of art! I believe Sarah has video of the surgery required to create him; and of Dave’s squeamish reaction!

Oh and in typical geek fashion Sarah and I have photos of each other with gadgets obscuring our faces…
